Attack of the Clones, released on November 22nd, 2002, was the second film in the Attack of the Clones trilogy. It was written and directed by George Lucas and starred Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. This sequel to Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones is set five years after that film. Anakin is now a grown man who has turned to crime and crime kingpin Jabba The Hutt (the long-awaited return of Nick Nolte) for answers about his mother's death. Obi-Wan, now a General in the Republic Army, and Anakin's secret wife Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) must rescue Anakin from the dark side. The Jedi Council then decide that Anakin is too much of a threat to be left alive and Obi-Wan must kill him. Lucas began developing this film soon after the release of Attack of the Clones. He hired Jonathan Hales – who had written several unproduced scripts for Lucas – to write the first draft of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith . That draft was finished in April 2003 and Lucas hired screenwriter and novelist Alexander Weinstein to rewrite it, adding scenes involving Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Lucas continued to revise it over the next year. He made uncredited edits to Weinstein's draft, which added Hayden Christensen's character Anakin. The film was released in the US on May 19th, 2005 in 3,661 theaters. It grossed $80 million in its opening weekend at #1 and $108 million total by Memorial Day. The film eventually grossed $848 million worldwide. The DVD was released September 21st, 2005 and sold 1 million copies in its first week of release making it the fastest selling DVD of all time. On freshness, there are two particular scenes at the beginning and end of the film that are really strong. Next, the first act is excellent; it's entertaining and interesting. The second act is where some of the problems begin. It drags on for too long and would have benefited from cutting out some of the scenes like Palpatine's talk with Plo Koon. The fight scene on Geonosis is really good; however, I didn't like how they edited it into one scene, but I think they did a good job with it. When Anakin says "I'm your father" to Obi-Wan - that was an excellent scene because it showed how they were related... even more of a bond. The movie had its flaws, of course. A lot of people have complained about the dialogue and Jar Jar's accent, but I think it's not that bad. The actual fight between Yoda and Palpatine is poorly shot and edited, I felt like I was watching a video game cut scene. And lastly, the CGI on Yoda looked pretty bad in some parts. I thought that Ewan McGregor did a great job as Obi-Wan Kenobi in this movie because he channeled Alec Guinness's performance from A New Hope. cfa1e77820
